Erindale
Erindale is a neighbourhood of
Mississauga to the west of Toronto and north of
Oakville. Its western boundary is the
Credit River, and it runs diagonally south between the 403 to the QEW expressway, eastwards to Mavis Road.
Original European settlers bought the land of
Erindale from the Mississauga Indians and developed mills along the
Credit River. A major military road was named
Dundas Street after the British Secretary-at-War, and the village grew up around it. The village went through various name changes, until finally becoming
Erindale in the early 1900’s, a reflection of the large number of Irish immigrants to the area.
Development of
Erindale as a suburb of Toronto really began in the late 1950’s when
Erindale Woods was built north of
Dundas Street. Starting in the 1960’s the large
Erin Mills neighbourhood was developed. Other neighbourhoods within Erindale include
Huron Park,
South Millway,
Sherwood Forest and
Sawmill Valley. In 1967, the
University of Toronto built the 225-acre
Mississauga campus, its second largest, on the banks of the Credit River in
Erindale.
Residential styles in
Erindale are typical of mid-century development, with many
ranch,
split level,
bungalow and two storey homes, both
detached and
semi-detached. Prices remain quite
affordable, and it is an established
family neighbourhood. However, there are large
custom-built luxury homes along the Credit River, taking advantage of the views. There is also a mix of low and high rise
condominiums in the area.
There are several
schools in the area, both
public and
Catholic, as well as
Montessori schools, Holy Name of Mary College School, Bronte College and Meadow Green Academy
private schools, and Woodlands, a combined elementary and secondary school of the
Peel-Dufferin School Board that features ESL, Peer-Assisted Learning and programs for gifted children.
Erindale Park, off
Dundas Street, is the largest in Mississauga at 225 hectares. Besides picnics, barbeques, bird-watching and a playground area, the David Culham Trail provides spectacular views of the Credit River for hikers, joggers, cyclists, and cross-country skiers. Golfers are a few minutes from both the
Credit Valley Golf and Country Club and the
Mississauga Golf and Country Club.
The
Erin Mills Town Centre, located just north of the 403, has a large selection of popular shops and services.
Commuters have
easy access to the Hwy 403, which leads to the 401, as well as the QEW to the south. The
Erindale station of the
GO Train service is on Rathburn Road.
